The three-day 64th Annual Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in the United States concluded last Sunday July 1st. at the Farm Show Expo Centre in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

The Annual Convention was attended by more than 11,400 people from across the United States and numerous other countries, said the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in a press release issued today.

The Khalifa of Islam, Hadhrat (His Holiness) Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Muslim Community, had travelled from London, to attend the Annual Convention.

His Holiness attended the final session and addressed various issues of importance during his concluding speech.

The address was also broadcast live on Muslim Television Ahmadiyya International globally, the community’s 24-hour TV channel with transmissions in nearly a dozen languages.

His Holiness’ presence, the community press release said, led to a highly emotional and charged atmosphere as the Ahmadi Muslims were overwhelmed at being in the presence of the Khalifa.

In his address, His Holiness began by speaking about late John Alexander Dowie of Zion, Illinois, who more than a hundred years ago claimed prophethood but was left humiliated and abandoned after a prayer-duel challenge from the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, India, who claimed to be the Promised Messiah.

Dowie had failed to heed the warnings to refrain from attacking the Holy Founder of Islam the Holy Prophet Muhammad, and met a helpless end.

Kicked out by the very church he had founded and abandoned by his confidants, Dowie suffered from paralysis, his wife left him and his children died without ever marrying – leaving no one carrying the ‘Dowie’ name forward.

Some newspapers in the US, who had followed the prayer duel challenge in 1900s, at the conclusion declared Dawie met a “pathetic end.”

“Great Is Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, The Messiah,” read The Sunday Herald of Boston, Massachusetts, USA headline. “Foretold Pathetic End of Dowie…”

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad also counseled the attendees about the dangers of consumerism and materialism saying that the global financial crisis had highlighted the superficial nature of material wealth.

“Material wealth, worldly status, owning a large house or an expensive car does not make anyone honorable in the sight of Allah…,” said His Holiness, Ahmad. “… no one should ever feel pride at his worldly and material gains and should never think that he is deserving of more respect and honor than those who have less material wealth.”

“We have all witnessed the results of the financial crisis that has struck the world over the past few years. Many people who were seemingly extremely wealthy have been forced into a life of hardship and bankruptcy,” His Holiness further said.

His Holiness spoke about escalating levels of debt and credit saying, “A person may claim to be the owner of various possessions, but they have generally been acquired through the use of credit cards or through bank loans. Thus they are actually a means of consuming the purchaser into a life of debt.”

The Khalifa concluded with advice for the Ahmadi Muslims to continue to be a positive example to the people of the world by following the real and peaceful teachings of Islam.

“O people, who claim to have taken the pledge of the Messiah of the Age, become those who the Promised Messiah(as) described as the luscious and ever green branches of his blessed tree,” addressed His Holiness. “Prove true the statement of the Promised Messiah(as) that you are a truthful Community.”

“Prove to the world that you will make the wealth and successes of the material world your slave and your follower, rather than yourself becoming a slave of the material world,” His Holiness further added.
