A citizen’s rally condemning the sectarian attacks on minority communities in Ramu, Ukhiya and Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar and Patiya in Chittagong called for restoring confidence of the religious and ethnic minorities and a judicial probe into the incidents as the government’s probe failed to identify the real culprits behind such acts.

The rally, held at Dhaka University campus, demanded visible punishment for the perpetrators of the attack and the local administration for failing to take appropriate measures to contain such acts.

Speakers at the rally demanded banning political use of religion and developing the public administration and the national curricula based on secularism.

Columnist Syed Abul Maksud said the people of Bangladesh had fought for independence to have a secular Bangladesh but it became utter failure. ‘Such failure led to continuous attacks on religious and ethnic minorities and their places of worship,’ he said.

Shaktipada Tripura, organising secretary of Bangladesh Adivasi Forum, said a powerful axis which always remained invisible was behind the recent attacks in Ramu, Ukhia, Teknaf and Patiya  and the attacks on hill people in Rangamati. ‘The prevailing state of impunity encourages them to carry on such attacks repeatedly,’ he said.

Jahangirnagar University vice-chancellor, Anwar Hossain, laid stress on identifying the factors behind such attacks. He condemned the failure of the state machinery and questioned their functionality.

‘The constitution was secular when Bangladesh was born. But it had been turned a communal one by the military rulers and it still remains the same. The constitution needs to be freed from communalism,’ he said.

Buddhist guru Dharmamitra Mahasthabir, said the attacks not only destroyed millennium old heritage but also the beginning of a conspiracy to annihilate the religious minorities and indigenous peoples.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat leader Ahmad Tabshir Chowdhury called for waging a united movement against sectarian attacks by bringing all democratic and non-political forces on a single platform.

Workers Party lawmaker Fazle Hossain Badsha said the fundamentalist axis was plotting against the ongoing trial of the war criminals and such attacks were part of that to divert people’s attention.

The daily Samakal managing editor Abu Sayeed Khan said both the major political parties were harbouring political use of religion but they were expecting non-communalism. He demanded banning all kinds of political use of religion.
