ISLAMABAD: Civil society and academia representatives on Tuesday said curricular reforms are the only long-term cure for defeating hate speech, rejecting sectarian and religious prejudices and defeating forces of chaos.

They were expressing these views at a seminar jointly organised by ActionAid Pakistan and the Peace Education and Development (PEAD) Foundation. The speakers underscored the need for urgently fixing historical, social and political inaccuracies in the curricula that they said fed ignorance and perpetuated distortions to the disadvantage of religious and ethnic minorities.

Rumana Chaudhry recalled that Islamisation started immediately after the death of Quaid-e-Azam and people like Zulfikar Ali Bhutto introduced Islamic Studies as compulsory subject and declared Friday as holiday and Ziaul Haq further strengthened the process. Ahmadis were declared as non-Muslims at the times of ZAB, the modern state should have no business with the religious beliefs of individuals.
