Telling the truth should be news – If it happened, it will be here…

Taliban misrepresent Islam

In an effort to denounce the attack on Malala Yousufzai, it is imperative to comprehend who represents the real face of Islam. The Taliban, who are bent upon returning to the age of ignorance that prevailed before Islam, are agents of hate and barbarism —the true blasphemers of Prophet Muhammad.

Malala Yousufzai incurred the wrath of the Taliban for daring to take on the challenge of educating girls in a tribal society that is reminiscent of the Dark Ages. The attackers deemed her pro-West and an anathema to their hard-line interpretation of Islamic dogma. However, a quick reality check proves otherwise.

Prophet Muhammad championed the rights of women, especially female literacy. Before the advent of Islam, women had no rights.

Those who survived the infanticide were mere chattel for men. No small wonder that women, along with other beleaguered elements of society, were among the front-runners to embrace Islam as it provided solace for them.

Empowerment of women is not a mere cliche in Islam. There are concrete laws in the Quran that protect their rights of inheritance and guarantee them freedoms, which Western women are vying for to date.

Prophet Muhammad enjoined upon all Muslims (not just men) to seek knowledge, even if they had to go to China. This injunction captures the real essence of Islam with regard to educating girls. Let us remain mindful that this embodies the vision of Prophet Muhammad in seventh century Arabia.

Islam faces no imminent threat from movies like Innocence of Muslims, which is a blatant fabrication of lies guised under free speech. It hurt the sensibilities of Muslims and confounded all rational minds; a cogent rebuttal constitutes embarking upon the example of Prophet Muhammad and forgiving those who incite.

Killing and violence are antithetical to the values he preached. The brutality of the Taliban and the radical Muslims elsewhere in the world must not be deemed as the true face of Islam.
