Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat leaders on Saturday alleged that taking advantage of the failure of the local administration to take timely action miscreants attacked their members, burnt houses and demolished a mosque at Menanagar, a village in Taraganj in Rangpur.

They alleged that the administration took no action against the offenders though it was informed repeatedly.
They said Jamaat activists perpetrated the attacks to destroy social harmony in the country.

They made the allegations at a news conference at the central office the Ahmadiyya community at  Bakshi Bazaar.

Ahmadiyya Jamaat naib national ameer Meer Mobashsher Ali and national ameer Mobasherur Rahman spoke at the news conference.

Dhaka University professor Syed Anwar Hossain, writer Shahriar Kabir and BRAC director of human rights and legal aid service Faustina Pereira also spoke.

Meer Mobashsher Ali in his written statement requested the government to immediately rebuild the Ahmadiyya mosque at Menanagar to protect the constitutionally guaranteed rights of the Ahmadiyyas.

He also demanded security of life and property of Ahmadiyyas at Menanagar and their right to follow their faith without any obstruction.

Mobashsher also urged the government to identify and penalize the masterminds behind the incident.

Newspapers reported on Wednesday that an Islamist group burnt an under construction tin-shed mosque of the Ahmadiyyas and two houses of the community after the administration took the move to hold a peace meeting at Menanagar.

At least 15 persons, including policemen, students and journalists, were injured after the police stopped a group of attackers at Kisamat Menanagar.

Mobasherur said though it was informed repeatedly, the local administration failed to take prompt action against the attackers.

‘We contacted the local police station, upazila office, but they took no timely action. The police station recorded our general diary only after we had informed the matter to the higher authorities,’ he said.

Mobasherur said some jamaat leaders were found to have some links with the incident.

Anwar Hossain said the government had completely failed to discharge its constitutional responsibility at the trouble spot.

The administration remained ‘inactive’ during the incidents at Taraganj in Rangpur and Ramu, he said.
